Cell Banking is the core of the ECACC operation. For this reason ECACC places great importance on the principles of good cell banking practises and operates a strictly controlled system of tiered, Master and Working Cell Banks.

Resources
ECACC has 10 specialist (Grade D or higher) cell culture laboratories with 19 class 2 microbiological safety cabinets that operate to containment level 2. They are used for many aspects of cell culture with a significant number being used at anyone time for some stage of the cell banking process. One of these laboratories is designated as a High Specification Cell Banking Laboratory and is primarily used for preparation of Master Cell Banks which may go on to be used in pharmaceutical production facilities. This laboratory is specified as a category D clean room allowing full segregation and clearance as well as being environmentally monitored.

ECACC's laboratory staff have been fully trained in the Standard Operation Procedures in place for all cell culture based operations.

Capability
The large number of dedicated cell culture facilities and trained personnel enables ECACC to respond quickly while at the same time, maintain routine operations at ECACC. Having a large number of laboratories also enables segregation of work where necessary allowing ECACC to take on a diverse range cell culture based projects.
