Following the publication of the draft sequence of the human genome in the year 2000, the MRC made awards to enable collections of large numbers of samples for thirteen common disorders of major public health significance. It was anticipated that these thirteen collections would form the basis of a national resource that should be managed centrally to ensure availability for future research. Consequently, the MRC also funded a central DNA banking initiative that has evolved into the UK DNA Banking Network (UDBN)
UDBN is a partnership between investigators and infrastructure providers. Its primary aim is to facilitate investigation of the genetics of high impact diseases. To achieve this, UDBN:
- harmonises and standardises sample and data management for numerous disease-based studies
- provides tools that assist in creating collaborations between study investigators and other scientists in the UK and overseas.
Go to www.dna-network.ac.uk to access data on subject phenotypes and on the availability of the corresponding DNA and cells. Then use UDBN's collaboration management system to initiate the right collaboration for you.
Investigators in the UDBN partnership hold samples at ECACC (for cell lines and peripheral blood lymphocyte samples) and the University of Manchester's Centre for Integrated Genome Research (for DNA samples).
ECACC holds cell lines and peripheral blood lymphocyte samples from UDBN partners studying the following disorders:
